It's a good question. It also begs a secondary question of "what exactly do we mean by growth?" We get so sidelined by numbers that we forget that having a thousand people in the pews that leave church Sunday morning to head back to a separate sphere of "secular" is really what Jesus was talking about. Perhaps if we started measuring growth in terms of formation, nurture and Christian community, we would be much better off as a denomination and a church.
