Hoynes Employs The Nixon/Otter Defense

Speaking of Nixon references in "The West Wing" (okay, I'm pretty much only speaking to myself), in episode 2:18, as Toby Ziegler tries to figure out why Bartlett's vice president, John Hoynes (Tim Matheson), is acting like he's about to run for president, he wonders aloud whether an "Eisenhower and Nixon" scenario is afoot. With this implicit reference to President Eisenhower's hints in 1956 that he might dump his VP, Richard Nixon, Toby is suggesting that Bartlett may have let it be known that he's considering looking for a new running mate, prompting Hoynes to feign a move to challenge him for the Democratic nomination (in 2002, oddly enough).

In this episode, we also learn that Republican deputy White House counsel Ainsley Hayes (Emily Procter) is an Episcopalian. Duh.
