For Christians, the Transfiguration -- when Jesus's friends hear God's voice say, "Listen to him" -- amounts to the authority of revelation. Humans (faithful or not) experience authority in other ways as well: The authority of economic and political power; inherited authority; the authority of those who know more than we; and perhaps most potent of all, the authority of those who sacrifice and suffer for us. My Sunday, Feb. 22 sermon at St. John's is here.
